Happy 2004. Have you made those typical New Year Resolutions? On the business front, you want to grow by X-percent, and on the personal front you want to exercise more or lose weight.

Maybe we could all lighten our loads if we start a new resolution tradition. We can tap into our heartfelt hopes and dreams, and yes, those other business and personal goals will still be out there. But for now, let your mind soar. Consider the four areas that engage people, as singled out by Gail Blohowiak of Green Bay in her book, A Reflective Journey. Here's our own view of those essentials:
  1. Heart. Is your heart in your work? In your life? If you allow yourself to be "sappy," you are rare in the business world. If the "real" you has heart, deciding to show it more will be an easy-to-reach resolution. People who are passionate about their life and their work show symptoms of being heartfelt-they are nearly there!

  2. Brain. Sometimes we all feel that to-do lists and projects are piling up on us and we are out of control. Many of us have started 2004 at a rip-roaring pace like a racehorse out of the block too soon. Whoa Impatience! Racing off the track will not get you to the finish line. Engage the gray matter. You will live to run more races when you stop to connect your brain to your heart, body and spirit. A full panoply of your self's tools will get you further, and your brain will tell you so if you let it.

  3. Body. Strength, endurance, energy and reserves. These words are reminders that our goals need our bodies' support in meeting all other life's resolves. When we think of the end-game of strength, endurance, energy and reserves, it's easier to want to be physically fit. Think strength instead of "I have to work out." Think energy instead of "I have to get more sleep at night." Focusing on the results helps us go down a healthier path. The exercise and good-night's-sleep will come easier.

  4. Spirit. Pare away the things you do not need. Paring away includes letting go those things you cannot control, according to A Reflective Journey. For example, "I can control my reaction to events. I may not be able to control the event." Or the obvious, but often forgotten "I can control myself. I cannot control others." Allow yourself and your spirit to soar in 2004.
